This event focused on using the PTA's National Standards for Family/School Partnerships to Improve Family School Partnerships in Special Education. Attendees left this meeting wanting to start a monthly or quarterly support group for parents involved in the special education programs at school and opening discussions about improving communication as a partnership.

Parent Leadership in Special Education Training Scheduled in Exeter

As parents you are the leaders in your family. You have unique experiences, and expertise that others can benefit from.
Many parents of children with disabilities want to become more involved in school improvement initiatives. But in order for parents to successfully participate as members of these partnership teams, they need to understand the overall special education system and how to successfully work with school district personnel. The New Hampshire Connections project is excited to offer the Parent Leadership in Special Education Training. This training is designed to develop and utilize the leadership skills of parents of children with disabilities so that they may partner with parents and schools to develop parent support groups, planning school improvement activities and to support school personnel. A  training is being offered on Thursday nights in February in Exeter. Check out this pdf flier and call to apply!

Forum on Special Education

Family-School Partnerships in Special Education
South Central Forum
McDonough School, Manchester

Recently there was a world cafe style forum that provided an opportunity for teachers, parents, special education directors and community members to participate in small group discussions about family-school partnerships in special education in a relaxed setting. Participants from Hampstead, Hudson, Litchfield, Manchester, and Sandown attended our initial kick-off event. See summary highlights here.

NH Connections will be holding three additional round table discussions focusing on:

  •  Reviewing the newly adopted NH Standards and Goals for Family School partnerships
  •  Understanding the Department of Education’s Parent Involvement Survey for Your Region
  •  Making Your Voice Heard- Participating in the Next Department of Education’s Parent Involvement Survey

These discussions will provide you with a safe place and opportunity to:

  •  ask questions,
  •  share your concerns, and
  •  learn how to make a difference for your family, your school, and in your community.

Leave with concrete ideas and make a difference.
